Venezuela is in the headlines this week, with the head of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, declaring himself as the interim President to replace Nicolas Maduro and mass protests behind both sides.
But the story between the drama goes back years, with the socialist project of Maduro’s predecessor Hugo Chavez falling into serious economic difficulties and facing US sanctions. Inflation is projected to reach 10,000,000% this year and more than three million people — 10% of the population — have fled.
