Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani during a press conference, November 19, 2020

UPDATE, JULY 8:

Washington DC has followed New York State in suspending the law license of Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani.

The DC Court of Appeals cited the New York ruling in its order on Wednesday.

Giuliani was the US Attorney in Manhattan and Mayor of New York from 1994 to 2001.

ORIGINAL ENTRY, JUNE 25: The license to practice of Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani is suspended by a New York court over his “demonstrably false and misleading statements” trying to overturn the 2020 Presidential election.

The New York State appellate court issued the ruling on the recommendation of a disciplinary committee, which found that he had sought to mislead judges, lawmakers, and the public as he pursued Trump’s campaign against November’s outcome.

Giuliani and other lawyers for Trump and his allies lost 63 of 64 cases from November 2020. Some of those cases featured unsupported conspiracy of electoral fraud with rigged voting machines.

Giuliani is also under investigation by Federal prosecutors over his activities in Ukraine. That work included the long-running Trump effort to stir up disinformation about Presidential Joe Biden, then a candidate for the Democratic nomination. The exposure of the campaign led to Trump’s impeachment in January 2020.

In late April, the FBI searched Giuliani’s office and home for documents.

In Thursday’s 33-page decision, the New York appellate court said Giuliani’s actions were an “immediate threat” to the public, having “directly inflamed” tensions that led to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

The seriousness of respondent’s uncontroverted misconduct cannot be overstated. This country is being torn apart by continued attacks on the legitimacy of the 2020 election and of our current president, Joseph R. Biden.

Giuliani can appeal the suspension, but the court noted that the attorney is likely to face “permanent sanctions”. The eventual punishment ranges from a written warning to disbarment.

Trump blustered in a statement on Thursday, “Can you believe that New York wants to strip Rudy Giuliani, a great American Patriot, of his law license because he has been fighting what has already been proven to be a Fraudulent Election?”
