Iran retaliated with missile fire on US bases in Jordan after American attacks on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, August 30, 2026

UPDATE 0508 GMT:

Only five monitored vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, below the 10-day average of about 14 and the pre-war average of around 135.

Four ships entered the strait while one exited. The figures do not include ships navigating the waterway with their transponders turned off.

No liquid tankers were among the vessels transiting on Monday. Among those entering, one was an empty handy-sized gas tanker on the Iranian route, and other three were laden dry bulk carriers.

UPDATE, SEPT 1:

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned amid friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Supported by Donald Trump, Hegseth has pursued a purge of the Pentagon and the military. He has fired senior officials and forcing out commanders such as Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George — reportedly because the four-star general supported an investigation of a military helicopter overflight of Kid Rock’s mansion — and the commander of forces in Europe and Africa, Gen. Christopher Donahue.

Driscoll was a supporter of George. He told legislators in April that he and his family drove to the general’s house following his resignation “and we all gave him a hug”.

He is an Iraq war veteran, tech investor, and former adviser to J.D. Vance.

UPDATE 1541 GMT:

A “senior Iranian source” says overnight clashes between the US and Iran are a “limited and contained confrontation”, but warns Tehran is ready to deliver a harsh response if attacked again.

The official said conditions in the Strait of Hormuz “will become worse for vessels that violate” rules set by Iran for passage through the waterway. They declared no target in the region is beyond Tehran’s reach.

UPDATE 1532 GMT:

US Central Command has denied the statement of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (see 0546 GMT) that a ship was disabled when it struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Centcom said, “Iran’s claim that a supertanker passing through Strait of Hormuz struck two mines and was brought to a complete stop is false.”

Iranian outlets say US strikes on Larak Island on Sunday night killed a member of the Revolutionary Guards’ navy, Ali Fayazi.

Continuing attacks despite a purported ceasefire, Israeli forces shelled Mansouri and Beit al-Sayyad in southern Lebanon overnight.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say a supertanker caught fire and was halted after it struck two naval mines in the southern Strait of Hormuz.

The Guards said the tanker was illegally attempting to pass through the waterway. It did not identify the vessel or provide information about the crew.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: US forces have attacked Iran for the first time since July 29, prompting Iranian retaliatory strikes on airbases in Jordan.

The US struck two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. An American official claimed ⁠Revolutionary Guards Corps were “observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines” into the Strait.

The Guards said the attack killed and wounded several soldiers and civilians and said it would be met with “punishment”. Hours later, the Iranians claimed they “targeted technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and enemy fighter jet positions” with ballistic missiles “at the US-operated King Hussein and al-Azraq airbases in Jordan”, causing “heavy damage”.

They also claimed a drone attack on Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE early Monday morning, targeting US forces and helicopters. A spokesperson added that the US would pay for its attack economically and militarily.

Iranian officials also claimed that air defenses downed a US MQ-9 drone, which crashing into Gulf waters.

An American official said all incoming missiles on US forces in Jordan had been intercepted with no significant impact. The Jordanian Army posted, “Air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that breached the kingdom’s airspace at dawn today.”

The UAE’s Defense Ministry said its air force responded to a drone over its territorial waters, approaching from Iran. It did not provide further details.

The Ministry rejected Iran’s claim that the al-Menhad airbase was targeted by missiles.
