Monday’s Coverage: Zelensky — Russia Fires 800 Jet-Powered Drones in 4 Days

UPDATE 2019 GMT:

The German government has blamed Russia for the drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the “dangerous behavior” was part of a systematic and concerted effort by Moscow to “cause great damage” with hybrid attacks.

A drone loaded with explosives was discovered by a bus driver, who disabled it by knocking it out of the air, at Leipzig/Halle. It was next to the wing of a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane used to transport weapons to Ukraine.

Dobrindt and Wadephul said the Russian State had provided the knowhow and equipment for the planned attack and “low-level agents” were recruited to carry it out.

Wadephul said Russia will face a package of penalties, as Germany responded “to this hybrid attack in Leipzig with proportionate and measured, yet equally resolute, action”.

The Russian Ambassador had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry. The Russian Consulate in Bonn will be closed later this month. Russian House — a cultural and science institute in the center of Berlin, and the alleged launchpad for a number of hybrid attacks — will be evicted from its rented building.

Joining Sweden and Finland, Germany will clamp down on Russia’s shadow fleet. More individuals will be blacklisted, and there will be tighter border controls on Russians entering Germany.

Berlin is also backing the European Commission’s 22nd package of sanctions, covering a further 1,600 companies and organizations with a Russian connection.

UPDATE 1324 GMT:

At least 16 civilians were murdered and 54 injured by Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past day.

Air defenses downed 187 drones and 12 missiles. Strikes were recorded at 28 locations.

In the Kyiv region, at least 12 people were slain and 21 injured (see Original Entry).

In the Kherson region in the south, a Russian first-person view drone struck a car, killing one person and setting the vehicle on fire.

In the Donetsk region in the east, one person was slain and nine injured.

In the Zaporizhzhia region in the southeast, two civilians were murdered and 12 injured, including four emergency workers by a “double tap” strike.

Casualties were also reported in the Odesa, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

UPDATE 1000 GMT:

At the G20 Finance Ministers summit in North Carolina, German Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil has confronted Russia’s Anton Siluanov over the invasion of Ukraine.

The G20 meeting was the first with Russian involvement since the full-scale invasion was launched in February 2022.

Klingbeil chided the Trump Administration:

The signal to welcome the Russian Finance Minister here I perceive as irritating, because I would have wished for clarity from the U.S. side, and that you do not receive him here like a normal guest. This is a regime that has been leading a brutal, illegal war against Ukraine.

Klingbeil said he told Siluanov that Russia must end its invasion and that Germany remains firmly on Ukraine’s side.

He successfully led a push to exclude the Russian from the group photo.

We need to move from endless war to an end to the war, to a cessation of hostilities. And we will need to move precisely in this direction.

UPDATE 0910 GMT:

A suspected Russian “shadow fleet” oil tanker was intercepted ⁠by the ⁠European Union’s ​naval mission in the Mediterranean on Sunday.

EU foreign policy head Kaja Kallas posted, “The oil ‌tanker MV Sun, suspected ‌of sailing under false flag in breach of international maritime law, was boarded on August 30 in the ‌Mediterranean by Operation Eunavfor Med Irini forces for ​flag verification.”

UPDATE 0552 GMT:

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Donald Trump’s envoys, real estate developer Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, on Monday.

Zelensky posted about a “detailed and constructive conversation”, as he sought to confirms the dates for the envoys’ first visit to Ukraine: “Such a trip would be highly beneficial for hammering out solutions for peace.”

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov at the G20 finance leaders’ summit in North Carolina. Bessent reportedly said no economic relief for Russia is ‌possible ‌until its invasion ends.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: At least 12 civilians have been murdered in and near Ukraine’s capital Kyiv by the sixth consecutive day of Russian aerial attacks.

Air defenses fought drones late into Monday, and Russia fired ballistic missiles on the capital overnight.

Eight people were killed and five injured in the capital. Seven of the victims were slain in a ballistic missile attack on a railway depot and facilities. Six were railway workers.

Elsewhere in the Kyiv region, four civilians were murdered and 12 injured.

Earlier on Monday, at least seven civilians were murdered and 45 wounded in and near the capital.

Last night’s air raid alert sounded at 7:46 p.m. and fires were reported from 9:30 p.m., including in the Darnytskyi, Solomyanskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts.

Further alerts were declared at 11:32 p.m. and 2:10 a.m. Dozens of explosions shook the capital from 2:23 a.m. through 2:34 a.m.

At least seven people were slain at two locations in the Darnytskyi district, and one was killed in the Holosiivskyi district by a strike on a non-residential” building.
