US forces have attacked Iran for the first time since late July, prompting Iranian retaliatory strikes on airbases in Jordan.
The US struck two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. An American official claimed Revolutionary Guards Corps were “observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines” into the Strait.
The Guards said the attack killed and wounded several soldiers and civilians and said it would be met with “punishment”. Hours later, the Iranians claimed they “targeted technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and enemy fighter jet positions” with ballistic missiles “at the US-operated King Hussein and al-Azraq airbases in Jordan”, causing “heavy damage”.
A spokesperson added that the US would pay for its attack economically and militarily.
Iranian officials also claimed that air defenses downed a US MQ-9 drone, which crashing into Gulf waters.
An American official said all incoming missiles on US forces in Jordan had been intercepted with no significant impact.
