Iran retaliated with missile fire on US bases in Jordan after American attacks on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, August 30, 2026

UPDATE 2053 GMT:

Three missiles have reportedly been intercepted in the skies over eastern Dara’a Province in southern Syria.

The attack was aimed at Jordan, where missiles have reportedly been intercepted over the city of Mafraq.

UPDATE 2048 GMT:

The Iranian Red Crescent has raised the toll from a US strike on a wedding celebration in southern Iran (see 1958 GMT) to four people killed, including a child, and more than 50 wounded.

Shrapnel hit a residential home in the city of Kuhestak in Hormozgan Province, said the Red Crescent. It released footage of mounds of debris around a damaged home, as rescuers rush through the scene. People are screaming in the background.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say they have started retaliation for the US strikes:

[We launched] attacks that tightened the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and strengthened the determination of the fighters to suppress the foreign forces interfering in the Strait of Hormuz.

The brave warriors of the IRGC have begun a regretful response to the aggressors, and in the first action, using the new aerospace defense system, they shot down the 50th advanced MQ-9 drone of the invading American army.

UPDATE 1958 GMT:

The US has launched a new set of attacks on Iran.

At least two people were killed and several others wounded at a wedding in the coastal city of Bandar Kuhestak in southern Iran, said Ahmad Nafisi, Deputy Governor of Hormozgan Province.

“A residential home was attacked while people were holding a wedding ceremony,” Nafisi said.

The situation at Jiroft airport in Kerman Province in southeast Iran is “under control”, said an Iranian official, after a US projectile landed outside the airport’s runway. There were no casualties or damage to airport structure.

There are reports of explosions on Qeshm Island in the northern Strait of Hormuz, the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar, and Konarak in southeast Iran.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards spokesperson Sardar Mohebi posted, “Severe punishment awaits the aggressors, and America will regret its new attacks.”

UPDATE 1316 GMT:

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani says Damascus is pursuing a “diplomatic solution” with Israel, using US mediation, despite ongoing Israeli strikes and raids in southern Syria (see 0518 GMT).

“The attacks are still ongoing. We observed 65 incursions in July alone, and 52 in the first 18 days of August,” Shaibani told a press conference alongside visiting Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen. Syria registered 147 cases of Israeli troops seizing Syrians so far this year, with “49 of them still detained”.

Despite these challenges, we are still committed to the option of a diplomatic solution and we are working seriously to achieve this. We are engaged in negotiations mediated by the United States of America.

Israel and Syria have held several rounds of direct talks, most recently last month in Jordan. Last week the head of Israel’s intelligence service Mossad, Roman Gofman, and Shaibani convened to defuse tensions.

UPDATE 0521 GMT:

Asia’s imports of refined fuels have fallen to their lowest level since the start of the US-Israel War on Iran.

The region, which consumes about 90% of Middle East crude, has cut its imports by nearly 4 million barrels per day.

Imports of light and middle distillates fell to an estimated 5.10 million bpd in August, from 5.61 million bpd in July. Before the war, the three-month average was 7.06 million bpd.

UPDATE 0518 GMT:

Israeli forces are advancing further into Dara’a Province in southern Syria.

At least 10 Israeli military vehicles were seen near the village of Jumla in the western suburbs of Dara’a city, supported by reconnaissance aircraft overhead.

UPDATE 0508 GMT:

Only five monitored vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, below the 10-day average of about 14 and the pre-war average of around 135.

Four ships entered the strait while one exited. The figures do not include ships navigating the waterway with their transponders turned off.

No liquid tankers were among the vessels transiting on Monday. Among those entering, one was an empty handy-sized gas tanker on the Iranian route, and other three were laden dry bulk carriers.

UPDATE, SEPT 1:

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned amid friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Supported by Donald Trump, Hegseth has pursued a purge of the Pentagon and the military. He has fired senior officials and forcing out commanders such as Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George — reportedly because the four-star general supported an investigation of a military helicopter overflight of Kid Rock’s mansion — and the commander of forces in Europe and Africa, Gen. Christopher Donahue.

Driscoll was a supporter of George. He told legislators in April that he and his family drove to the general’s house following his resignation “and we all gave him a hug”.

He is an Iraq war veteran, tech investor, and former adviser to J.D. Vance.

UPDATE 1541 GMT:

A “senior Iranian source” says overnight clashes between the US and Iran are a “limited and contained confrontation”, but warns Tehran is ready to deliver a harsh response if attacked again.

The official said conditions in the Strait of Hormuz “will become worse for vessels that violate” rules set by Iran for passage through the waterway. They declared no target in the region is beyond Tehran’s reach.

UPDATE 1532 GMT:

US Central Command has denied the statement of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (see 0546 GMT) that a ship was disabled when it struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Centcom said, “Iran’s claim that a supertanker passing through Strait of Hormuz struck two mines and was brought to a complete stop is false.”

Continuing attacks despite a purported ceasefire, Israeli forces shelled Mansouri and Beit al-Sayyad in southern Lebanon overnight.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say a supertanker caught fire and was halted after it struck two naval mines in the southern Strait of Hormuz.

The Guards said the tanker was illegally attempting to pass through the waterway. It did not identify the vessel or provide information about the crew.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: US forces have attacked Iran for the first time since July 29, prompting Iranian retaliatory strikes on airbases in Jordan.

The US struck two rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. An American official claimed ⁠Revolutionary Guards Corps were “observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines” into the Strait.

The Guards said the attack killed and wounded several soldiers and civilians and said it would be met with “punishment”. Hours later, the Iranians claimed they “targeted technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and enemy fighter jet positions” with ballistic missiles “at the US-operated King Hussein and al-Azraq airbases in Jordan”, causing “heavy damage”.

They also claimed a drone attack on Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE early Monday morning, targeting US forces and helicopters. A spokesperson added that the US would pay for its attack economically and militarily.

Iranian officials also claimed that air defenses downed a US MQ-9 drone, which crashing into Gulf waters.

An American official said all incoming missiles on US forces in Jordan had been intercepted with no significant impact. The Jordanian Army posted, “Air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that breached the kingdom’s airspace at dawn today.”

The UAE’s Defense Ministry said its air force responded to a drone over its territorial waters, approaching from Iran. It did not provide further details.

The Ministry rejected Iran’s claim that the al-Menhad airbase was targeted by missiles.
