EA on International Outlets: Explaining Israel’s “Demonstration” Strikes on Iran
I joined the Centre for India-West Asia Dialogue last week for a 38-minute presentation on the “indirect war” between Israel and Iran in the Middle East.
Amid last month’s exchange of “demonstration” strikes by Iran and Israel on each other, I offer historical context for the tensions. I navigate 21st-century developments across the region before offering my assessment: while a direct war is still unlikely, the “indirect war” — from Syria to Lebanon to Palestine — will continue, with Israel’s open-ended attacks on Gaza providing both the motive and rationale for Tehran’s leadership.

iranians voted on Friday to fill 45 seats. In terms of turnout, there was some stark differences In major cities like Tehran, Karaj and Shiraz only about 10% of eligibles showed up at the polls. In Tabriz it was 20%. However, in cities like Birjand, Qaemshahr, Rahmormoz, Parsabad and Shabestar, turnout was very high…around 60-70%. In other cities like Khorramabad, Kermamshah and Abadan it was 30-40%. Reformists won 7 of the 45 seats on offer, independents 6 and the remaining 32 were won by principlists: https://www.tasnimnews.com/fa/news/1403/02/22/3083376

America’s Patriot missiles were defeated by Iran’s ballistic missiles: https://www.tehrantimes.com/news/498126/America-s-Patriot-missiles-were-defeated-by-Iran-s-ballistic
“Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards fired a series of old drones and missiles with the aim of creating great panic and also involving Israel’s air defense response. Then, it fired about 12 modern ballistic missiles, most of which hit their targets. The targeted military sites were considered the most protected places on earth against ballistic missile attacks. After this attack, unknown American and Israeli officials admitted that the claim of 99% interception was fake. Despite much propaganda about the effectiveness of Israeli and American air defense systems, if a large number of missiles were fired at a target, no defense system on the planet could fully combat a large and concentrated attack.”
The 12 modern missiles were the Dezful and the Kheiber-Shekan. Iran did not fire any other advanced missiles like the Fattah 1/2, the Sejjil-2, Haj Qassem and Khorramshahr. Israel alone spent $1.35bn shooting at old drones and missiles.
