Coronavirus — New Record as Iran Deaths Rise 20% in 1 Day

Having tamped down the first wave of the pandemic, Iran’s number have been rising since early May, after the Rouhani Government lifted restrictions on businesses, mosques, schools and universities, and other public spaces.

Even as the surge escalated through the summer and autumn, President Hassan Rouhani held out against reimposition of restrictions because of Iran’s economic crisis. In early October, the Government finally issued a mask mandate, initially for the capital Tehran and then for other cities. Tehran closed public spaces, including businesses and schools, from October 3, first for a week and then indefinitely

Rouhani did not refer to the record cases and deaths on Thursday. Instead, in comments to the National Coronavirus Task Force, he said:

The Supreme Leader made very important points, which shows that despite the very extensive actions in the past eight months, we still have a great deal to do that requires more cooperation and synergy in all groups involved in this jihadist fight against the virus.

Showing a concern about the spread of news about the pandemic, he asserted, “From now on, information about COVID-19 will be provided through a single channel, and that is the spokesman of the Task Force.”
