Trying to block humanitarian aid to opposition areas, prevent any obstacle to military offensives, and cover up chemical attacks, the Assad regime has attacked UN agencies as illegitimate.

The regime’s UN Ambassador Bashar al-Ja’afari (pictured) launched the verbal assault on Saturday in a General Assembly, during discussion of the UN’s budget for 2020. He claimed that other states had created six UN agencies to “fabricate accusations”.

Ja’afari issued the regime’s standard line that the UN is politicized in favor of Western countries. Continuing the Russia-regime campaign to undermine inspections of war crimes — including chemical attacks — he jabbed at an “abnormal entity” that collects “evidence”.

Moscow and the regime, backed by pro-Assad activists, have pursued a months-long propaganda campaign against the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. They are trying to prevent any additional findings of chlorine and sarin attacks, beyond the 33 already cited by the UN.

Russia and the regime are also blocking humanitarian operations, as their offensive seeks to overrun the last major opposition area in northwest Syria. Earlier this month Moscow vetoed the extension of UN cross-border assistance.

Since late April, the Russia-regime offensive against Idlib and northern Hama Provinces has killed more than 1,100 civilians, wounded thousands, and displaced more than 600,000.

On Friday, the UN confirmed that 235,000 civilians have fled within Idlib because of the resurgence of the offensive since last month. With many living outdoors in the Syrian winter, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned that the newly-displaced “are again suffering from the devastating consequences of hostilities”.

Ja’afari ignored the situation. Instead he declared that the US is a military occupier and aggressive force in Syria, plundering natural resources.

Seeking to regain oil and gas fields from Kurdish factions in northeast Syria, the regime has pushed the unsupported claim that American troops are selling the oil — needed by Damascus amid a 75% drop in GDP during the 105-month conflict.
