I joined RTE Radio 1’s David McCullagh on Tuesday to evaluate Donald Trump’s visit to Ireland this weekend.

I highlight that the trip is foremost for Trump’s ego and business interests, as he attends the Irish Open at his golf club in Doonbeg in western Ireland.

But I also look at his planned visits with both the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Micheál Martin and President Catherine Connolly, whose role is primarily ceremonial.

I explain the Irish Government’s interest in sticking to formalities and avoiding contentious issues, and whether this could be upset by Trump’s temperament and unpredictability.

We got a phrase back in the American South, when you get a visitor that you are not keen on, “Here’s your hat. What’s your hurry?”

It’s gonna be “Hi there, Mr President. How ya doing? Have a great time at the Open. Bye.”
