The Week in TrumpLand — “Grandpa Has Left The Building” From Ukraine to Iran to Canada
I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s Claire Byrne on Tuesday to discuss Donald Trump — wittingly or unwittingly — promoting a “fascist” uniform for the US Space Force.
Trump posted on social media about a uniform that bore a striking resemblance both to Nazi Germany’s military uniform and to that of The Empire’s Imperial Guard in Star Wars. He magnified the image with a reference to “Starship Troopers” — the 1997 film by the same name was about a proto-fascist State.
I highlight the dark comedy of the moment, and the serious side of Trump invoking authoritarianism and his ego as he and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth purge Pentagon officials and military commanders amid the failing US War on Iran.
I don’t think Donald Trump was saying, “We’re going to turn US Space Force into the arm of a fascist state led by me.” I think he posted without any knowledge of the topics and then counted on the media to amplify it.
Trump is attracted to the image because it is an intimidating look, and he and Pete Hegseth are into the aesthetic of scaring opponents.
We also consider Trump’s visit to Ireland this weekend.
