I joined Germany’s DW News on Wednesday to explain how Donald Trump’s ego has corrupted celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the US.
I review the shabby narcissism, grift, and destruction around Trump’s pursuit of a White House ballroom; an arch overshadowing the Washington Mall; the non-reflection, algae-filled Reflecting Pool on the Mall; the cancelled America 250 Concert; the State Fair on the Mall that few people attended; and his attempt to put his name on the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Beyond the black comedy, I note the wannabe authoritarianism at the heart of the “ego-fest”.
