EA on WION: Trump’s Failure After 100 Days of War on Iran
UPDATES: US-Israel Wars, Day 101 — US and Iran Renew Strikes on Each Other
UPDATE 2211 GMT:
The US military began strikes inside Iran at 1 a.m. local time (2100 GMT), Central Command confirmed.
CENTCOM said the attacks are at the direction of Donald Trump as “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression”.
Iranian media report assaults on the port city of Bandar Abbas; the city of Sirik in Hormozgan Province, also in southern Iran; and Qeshm Island. A US official said several Iranian air defense and radar systems were hit.
Another official said a Shahed one-way attack drone downed a US Army helicopter gunship over the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that drone manufacturing plants may be the targets of the American strikes.
UPDATE 1837 GMT:
Claiming that a US Army Apache helicopter gunship was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz, Donald Trump has said he “must, of necessity, respond to this attack”.
US Central Command is not yet supporting Trump’s claim, saying the cause of the crash early Tuesday is still under investigation. The two crew were rescued are in “stable condition”.
Just before Trump’s post, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on social media:
We prefer the language of diplomacy, but we speak other languages far more fluently. Break your commitments, and we’ll switch to what we speak best. You ride the horse you saddled!
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned after Trump had posted:
Foreign forces in proximity to our territory are at constant risk on account of their own human errors, plain accidents, or potentially being caught in crossfire.
To reduce risk, best solution is for them to leave.

UPDATE 1226 GMT:
The toll has risen to nine killed and 28 wounded from the Israeli strikes on a residential area in the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon.
Civil defense and ambulance teams are continuing search and rescue operations, clearing rubble to find those still missing.
UPDATE 1010 GMT:
Iran’s State TV says at least two members of an Iranian air defense unit were killed by Israeli airstrikes on Monday.
Bahman Hosseini and Ali Reza Abiri will be buried today in a city outside Tehran.
UPDATE 0929 GMT:
At least eight people have been slain by Israeli airstrikes on a housing area in the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon.
The Israelis earlier issued a forced evacuation order for residents.
At least four people were killed by Israeli attacks on the towns of Adshit, Haboush and Kfar Rumman.
Three people, including two rescuers, were injured in the town of Sharqiyeh by a “double-tap” attack as first responders were providing assistance to a wounded person.
UPDATE 0630 GMT:
Israel is continuing airstrikes across southern Lebanon this morning, targeting areas near the cities of Tyre and Nabatieh.
The Israeli military issued an evacuation order for residents of Tyre, Lebanon’s fifth biggest city, ahead of further attacks.
Residents were told to move north of the Zahrani River.
For the first time, the order covered Tyre’s Christian neighborhood with the Israelis claiming “dozens” of Hezbollah fighters were there.
UPDATE 0616 GMT:
Donald Trump is denying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defied his request not to attack Iran.
Trump issued the request in a conversation on Sunday after Iran fired around 30 ballistic missiles on northern and central Israel, declaring, “I call the shots. He does not call the shots.”
Hours later, Netanyahu ordered Israel’s retaliatory strikes on western and southern Iran.
Trump insisted to the BBC:
If I tell him to do something, he does it.
All I said [to Netanyahu] was we have to use common sense, we’re close to signing a very powerful deal, a very good deal.
Asked if Netanyahu had defied him, Trump responded, “No, no. That’s not what happened.” He lied, “[The missiles] had already gone, they were already on their way.”
He tried to portray his control by telling Axios, “I said: ‘Bibi, you better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon.’.”
UPDATE 0610 GMT:
A US Army Apache helicopter gunship crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. The two crew members were safely rescued, according to “two people briefed on the incident”.
The cause of the crash is not clear, said one source. The incident is under investigation.
UPDATE, JUNE 9:
In a televised speech on Monday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “At present, the fire on this front has been halted, because after the terrorist regime in Tehran was struck, it stopped attacking us. If that terrorist regime makes the mistake of attacking us again, we will respond with force.”
UPDATE 1639 GMT:
A US official has denied the Israeli claim that American forces intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles that were fired at Israel.
The official’s denial was a significant shift from Iran’s last strikes on Israel in early April. Then, the US expended significant quantities of its missile interceptors to shoot down the Iranian missiles.
Earlier Monday, an Israeli military official said the US assisted air defense efforts.
UPDATE 1429 GMT:
Israeli officials say Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after a phone call with Donald Trump, has told the military to halt preparations for further strikes on Iran.
An Israeli official said the decision came at the request of Trump, but emphasized that Israel will not stop its assault on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
A regional official said US has told Iran that there will be no more attacks by Israel if Tehran halts its missile strikes, and that Israel has agreed to stop for now.
The Iranian outlet Mehr said 15 people in the country were injured by Israel’s retaliatory strikes.
UPDATE 1155 GMT:
In another post on social media (see 0951 GMT), Donald Trump insists Israel and Iran are “looking to do an immediate ceasefire” and “final negotiations on peace” are underway.
He gave no details of the supposed discussions.
UPDATE 1150 GMT:
The Iranian military has declared a halt of its attacks on Israel for now.
It said the “Zionist regime and its supporters must learn a lesson” from Iran’s retaliation for Israeli assaults on Beirut: “However, it is emphasized if the aggressions and acts of mischief continue – including in southern Lebanon – much more severe and crushing actions than before will follow.”
UPDATE 1130 GMT:
Israel has conducted almost 3,500 airstrikes on Lebanon since a purported ceasefire was declared in mid-April, says Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
At least 3,613 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since the start of the war on March 2, reports the Lebanese Health Ministry.
UPDATE 0951 GMT:
Donald Trump has posted on social media, before 6 a.m. in Washington, to demand Israel and Iran “immediately stop shooting”.
UPDATE 0922 GMT:
The Israeli military says it is prepared for several days of attacks on Iran, and potentially a full resumption of the war.
The Israel Defense Forces said dozens of fighter jets struck nine Iranian air defense systems in western and central Iran. This morning, three factories at a petrochemical complex in southwest Iran were attacked.
The IDF claimed “full coordination” with US Central Command, despite the Netanyahu Government defying Donald Trump’s command for no strikes inside Iran. The American military has also participated in the interception of missiles fired by Iran at Israel, the Israelis asserted.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has spoken three times with CENTCOM head Adm. Brad Cooper.
UPDATE 0918 GMT:
Flights from the Shahid Ayatollah Dastgheib Airport in Shiraz in northwest Iran have been cancelled until 8 p.m. (1630 GMT).
UPDATE 0729 GMT:
The Iranian outlet Mehr says there were no casualties from two Israeli strikes on the Karun Petrochemical Plant in Mahshahr in southwest Iran.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
UPDATE 0721 GMT:
Iran Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei says the Trump Administration is responsible for breaches of the ceasefire: “The actions of the Zionist entity within the region cannot be looked at in isolation from the United States.”
UPDATE 0704 GMT:
Israel said there are no casualties from Iran’s latest missile salvo.
The Israel Defense Forces had said, “A short while ago, the IDF identified missiles launched from Iran towards the territory of the State of Israel. Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat.”
ORIGINAL ENTRY: Iran and Israel are attacking each other, collapsing both the temporary US-Iran ceasefire and the nominal Israel-Lebanon ceasefire.
Iran launched missiles on Israel for the first time since April on Sunday, retaliating for Israeli strikes on Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Lebanon’s capital Beirut.
Defying a Trump Administration instruction not to attack the area, Israel targeted the administrative and political center of Iran’s ally Hezbollah.
Hours later, Iran launched around 20 ballistic missiles at northern Israel. The Israelis claimed all were intercepted or struck open areas. The Iranians claimed they struck the Nevatim and Tel Nof airbases.
Early Monday, the Netanyahu Government rejected Donald Trump’s demand not to retaliate, carrying out airstrikes on central and western Iran.
Trump had declared after his call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the Israelis “won’t have any choice” but to accept his commands: “I call all the shots. He doesn’t call the shots.”
Explosions were reported in the Iranian cities of Tehran. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles, as Iran closed the airspace around the Imam Khomeini International Airport near Tehran, the Mehrabad Airport in the capital, and the Kermanshah International Airport in the west of the country.
The Israelis also fired again on Dahiyeh, killing two people and wounding 20.
Iran-Allied Yemen’s Houthis Join War
After the Israeli strikes, Saudi Arabia sounded missile alert sirens in the area of the Prince Sultan airbase, which hosts US forces and was attacked by Iran earlier in the war. The Israeli army said it was intercepting two missiles launched from Yemen by Iran’s Houthi allies.
Up to now, the Houthis had largely avoided direct involvement in the conflict. But Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree confirmed on Monday that they had fired the missile.
During Israel’s war on Gaza, the Houthis targeted shipping with more than 100 attacks in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait connecting them. Four vessels were sunk and traffic was sharply restricted.
Saree said the Houthis will impose a “complete and total ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea, and we consider all enemy movements to be legitimate military targets”.
We will not stand idly by in the face of the unjust siege imposed on our people and the peoples of the axis of jihad and resistance in Palestine, Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, and Iraq.
Trump: “I’m Not Happy About It”
On Sunday night, before Israel’s strikes on Iran, Trump said he wanted the Iranians to stop firing missiles and return to the negotiating table. However, he also directed his frustration at the Netanyahu Government’s strikes on Beirut: “I’m not happy about it.”
A “senior US official” confirmed Trump’s call to Netanyahu urging no retaliation inside Iran. He said Trump believed he “got Bibi to hold off for the time being”.
The collapse of the ceasefires unsettled oil markets. Brent crude jumped $3.50 to $96.59 a barrel early Monday. Stocks in Asia fell sharply.
