US Election 2024: Trump’s Hate-Filled New York Rally “Shook Me To My Core”

UPDATE, NOV 9:

I spoke early Friday with Times Radio’s Rosie Wright about Donald Trump’s pursuit of vengeance, the economic and political dynamics of a Trump Administration, and how we have to maintain civility amid his insults and lies.

You cannot sink to Trump’s level, which is simply slash and burn.

UPDATE, NOV 8:

I joined Irish and UK outlets on Thursday for further discussion of Donald Trump’s return to the White House and its threatened damage to the US and the world.

Listen to Pat Kenny Show

In a 15-minute chat with Dublin NewsTalk’s Pat Kenny, I consider the role in Trump’s victory of “feeling”, disinformation, and the failure of the Democratic Party to connect with many voters, especially over the economy and immigration.

I emphasize how Trump’s support fell compared to 2020 — but the Democrats lost 13.5 million votes.

The Trump “historic victory” is because people who might have voted for Kamala Harris stayed home. You have to establish why.

At the same time, you’ve got to recognize the scale of the disinformation and hate-mongering out there and how Trump has been successful with it.

Listen to BBC Radio 2 from 6:35

In an 11-minute interview, I spoke with Tina Daheley about the reasons for Trump’s triumph, beginning with his “exploitation of angry and fear, taking the oxygen out of the room”, and the failure of the Harris campaign to get facts across to voters.

Along the way I knock back the spin of Gawain Towler, an activist for Trump and for Britain’s hard-right Reform Party.

How indecent of someone to avoid the facts about what Americans face. How indecent of him to avoid any discussion of what actually happens with the economy and immigration by saying Americans have been told that they are stupid.

They’re not stupid. They’re worried. They’re concerned. They have heard Donald Trump talk about carnage. They have heard their cities called “hellholes”. They have been told — wrongly — that they are being invaded by millions of people. They have been told that millions of people will be deported. They have been told that their President-elect will enter the White House on Day 1 and act like a dictator.

ORIGINAL ENTRY, NOV 7: As convicted felon Donald Trump’s victory in the US Presidential election was confirmed on Wednesday, I spoke with a series of TV and radio outlets about the likely damage to America and the world.

Watch Australia’s ABC

I speak with ABC’s flagship program The World about how Trump’s tactics worked:

Trump did not debate issues. He did not even present facts on immigration and the economy.

In large part, this is a failure of the American political system, a failure of the media system, a failure of the civic community to ensure accountability.

Watch Al Jazeera English

Alongside Professor Natasha Lindstaedt of the University of Essex, I set out the gravity of the situation to Al Jazeera English:

The American political system is damaged.

It didn’t break when Trump tried to overthrow it in 2021, but it bent.

I could give you the facts on the economy, but the media wasn’t talking about it. And Donald Trump’s chaotic campaign of spectacle sucked all of the oxygen out of the room.

At the end of the day, it successfully exploited anger and resentment.

Listen to NewsTalk Breakfast from 3:39:

Moments after Trump’s triumph was called by the US press, I processed my initial response in an interview with Ciara Kelly.

This is a victory for no one in America.

Coming out of the Great Recession in 2008-2009, a lot of people have been angry and fearful for a long time. Donald Trump exploited that anger and resentment, and did so effectively.

The Democrats could not break through the anger and resentment. They could not make their narrative the big one.

We now enter a period which will not bring stability, will not assuage that anger and resentment. There will be instability on multiple fronts.

We have to stop treating this as normal.

I then make a personal appeal to the media — and to all of us — not to enable “misinformation, disinformation, and insults”.
