The Women’s March in Washington DC, January 2018

I joined China Radio International on Thursday to discuss the political, economic, and social situation in the US.

Listen to Discussion from 44:29

Using the latest opinion poll about the direction of America, China’s State broadcaster wanted to portray a straightforward image of the US in decline, division, and discord.

I pushed back against this. I noted the damage to the US from a polarized system, the Trump years, and setbacks over gun control and women’s rights — but I also highlighted recent achievements over climate change, health care, and competent politics.

And, most importantly, I emphasized the capacity of the American people to rise to domestic and global challenges, if they choose cooperation over cheap conflict.
