Israeli missiles have struck an Assad regime base, with Iranian personnel, in northwest Syria for the second time.

The strike was on the Nayrab base, adjacent to Aleppo’s international airport, on Sunday night. There are reports of at least pro-Assad troops killed.

Syrian State news agency SANA said, “The Zionist enemy…targeted with its missiles one of our military positions north of the Nayrab military airport, but the damage was only material.”

Elements of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are positioned at the base. Israel attacked the site on April 29, in raids that also targeted weapons depots in Hama Province.

Israel has stepped up its aerial assault on regime and Iranian positions this year. The objective has expanded from disrupting transfer of weapons and missiles to Lebanon’s Hezbollah, an ally of Iran and the regime, to an effort to disrupt the Iranian military presence throughout the country.

The Israelis have struck Iranian positions near Damascus and in central Syria. Last week they hit the T4 base, near Palmyra in Homs Province, for the fourth time since February.

In April, Israel carried out its largest wave of attacks since the early 1980s.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held separate meetings in Moscow this week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — who has called for complete Iranian withdrawal from Syria — and with the top aide of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati.
