UPDATE, JAN. 2:

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has complemented calls for retaliation against the US, over the assassination of Maj. Gen Qassem Soleimani, with the pledge that the killers will be brought to justice.

In a phone call with his Iraqi counterpart, the head of Iran’s judiciary, Ebrahim Raisi, said: “The carrying out of justice without any discrimination and exception is the Islamic Republic of Iran’s certain policy regarding the punishment of those who gave the orders, their accomplices, and the assassins in the terrorist move.”

Raisi echoed the warning of the head of the Quds Force, Brig. Gen. Esmail Qa’ani, at a Friday ceremony, “The time and location [of our revenge] will be determined by resistance forces.”

And a senior official of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Hashim Safi al-Din, vowed:

We promise [Iran’s Supreme Leader] Imam Khamenei and the IRGC Quds Force that the Resistance will not calm down and remain quiet.

We will take revenge from the villain America, and Trump will have the same fate as Saddam Hussein.

ORIGINAL ENTRY, JAN. 1: Iran’s military has threatened retaliatory attacks inside the US over the American assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards, on January 3.

Soleimani’s successor, Brig. Gen. Esmail Qa’ani (pictured), said Friday, “It is even possible that some people inside your home (the US)…would respond to your crime (of assassinating General Soleimani.”

The Trump Administration authorized the drone attack on Soleimani after Iranian-supported Iraqi militia Kata’ib Hezbollah fired rockets on Iraqi bases, wounding American troops and killing a US contractor.

The head of Kata’ib Hezbollah, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was also slain in the strike outside Baghdad International Airport.

In advance of the anniversary of the assassination, Iranian leaders have been issuing a series of tributes to Soleimani accompanied by warnings to the US.

Gen. Qa’ani told a ceremony that Americans may now find people “all around the world” who will be ready to punish the “cowards” who killed Soleimani and al-Muhandis. He added that the Quds Force will not be deterred by US “acts of mischief”.

Inaugurating energy projects on Thursday, President Hassan Rouhani also pledged vengeance:

[Donald] Trump committed many crimes and killed many people, but we will never forget these two cases. These [Americans] must know that we will always lament their loss and the Iranian nation, along with other nations in the region, will one day avenge their assassination.

He added, “All nations have realized that as long as the Americans are in this region, the region will not see a perfect and desirable [day], and the nations of the region, God willing, will one day expel these criminals and invaders.”
