I joined Monocle 24’s Andrew Mueller to discuss the comments of Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders about Cuba under the Castro regime.
I put the remarks of Sanders, the current front-runner for the Democratic nomination, in the context of US-Cuban relations since 1959, American political culture, and the battle between spectacle and issues in coverage of the 2020 US election.
Listen from 2:33:
It should be possible for a grown-up electorate to discuss an issue such as Cuba and hold two thoughts at the same time.
The country did have a vast expansion in literacy rates. It does have, despite US sanctions since 1959, an advanced health care system. It has prided itself on social and community programs.
At the same time, it is a one-party state which has been tough on its opponents, with political prisoners held for many years.
You should be able to hold both thoughts. But we’re talking politics and this is “good or evil” reaction to Cuba.
Hello Scot. Where I usually always agree with you, it was not mention that Sanders is a disaster for the Democratic party: If he wins the nomination, he will loose to Trump and the House and the Senate will go bright Red.!
He is too far left to be elected. Further, he and his Bernie Bros are almost as bad as Trump and his gang of loyal followers. Replace one incompetent President with another.
