Prime Minister Boris Johnson launches the UK Conservative Party manifesto, November 24, 2019
I joined talkRADIO’s Darryl Morris on Monday for a detailed discussion — amid a UK General Election campaign in which issues of trust and misinformation have been prominent — of whether declarations in party manifestos should be legally binding.
I explain why such a proposal, while attractive in principle, is far from practical. But that leads to the important question of what the public and the media can do to seek accountability from parties over their claims and commitments.
Along the way, we highlight the misinformation and distortions that have already marked this campaign, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s false statements about the National Health Service and Brexit.
