Iran has threatened Israel with retaliation if the Israeli Defense Forces continue missile strikes on Assad regime targets inside Syria.

Ali Shamkhani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, used a meeting with Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev in Tehran to say on Thursday:

The Zionist regime has been trying to establish a crisis in Syria and has taken steps to directly support terrorist groups and target the Syrian army and forces who are confronting terrorism.

And if it continues, it will face reactions that will cause regret.

Israel has periodically struck regime and Iranian targets throughout Syria’s 90-month conflict. Initially the attacks were to prevent Iranian transfers of missiles and weapons to Lebanon’s Hezbollah, another ally of the Assad regime, and to deter Hezbollah and Iran from establishing positions in southwest Syria near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

In the past year, the strikes have expanded across Syria on regime and Iranian positions, including in April with the largest Israeli raids in more than 30 years. The operations have backed the demand of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the withdrawal of Iranian and Iranian-led foreign personnel from the country.

Shamkhani proclaimed Russia-Iran security cooperation in the “fight against terrorism” and dialogue between the two countries on important regional and international issues. He said the relationship had been decisive in keeping regional security crises under control.

He did not refer to this month’s Russia-Turkey agreement on a demilitarized zone in northwest Syria, which suspended a Russian-regime offensive on Idlib and northern Hama Provinces.

Tehran had supported the Assad regime’s declaration that it will regain “every inch” of Syria.

Israel: We Are Ready to Reopen Golan Heights Crossing

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Thursday that Israeli is ready to reopen a crossing point into the Syrian side of the Golan Heights once Assad regime control is fully established.

Lieberman said, on a visit to the Israeli side of the Quneitra crossing: “The fact that we have come here, to Alpha Gate, and as far as we are concerned UNDOF [UN Disengagement Observer Forces] have begun to operate and patrol with the Israeli military’s assistance, says that we are ready for the crossing to reopen.”

But he added that the reopening is dependent on Assad regime moves, “At the moment, the ball is in the Syrian court.”

Russian military police have been patrolling on the Syrian side of Quneitra since a pro-Assad offensive, enabled by Russian airstrikes, reoccupied southwest Syria this summer.
