As the Iraqi Government declares victory in recapturing Mosul from the Islamic State, I spoke with the British Forces Broadcasting Service on Thursday about issues around and beyond the battle.

The discussion considered the question of civilian casualties in the offensive against Mosul — “the reality is between the extremes of coalition carpet-bombing and ISIS human shields” — before considering how and if Mosul and the rest of Iraq can finally recover from the 2003 war and the confrontation with the Islamic State in recent years.
