An Iraqi MP and prominent militia leader is among the latest victims of bombings in Baghdad by the Islamic State.
Ahmed al-Khafaji, a commander in the Shia Badr militia, was among 21 people killed in the attack in the Kadhimiyah area. The Islamic State said that the MP was the target of the suicide bomber, named as Abu Aisha al-Samarraie.
Khafaji was a member of the main Shiite bloc in parliament, the State of Law coalition, of which Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi’s Dawa party is also part.
The attack, which wounded at least 51 people, was the third in the mainly-Shia district of Kadhimiyah in two days.
At least 30 people were killed in the area and in Baghdad’s largest Shia district, Sadr City, on Monday.

The Islamic State also claimed the killing of the police chief of Anbar Province — an area largely controlled by jihadists — on Sunday.
