UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer gives his resignation speech in front of 10 Downing Street, London, June 22, 2026 (Sky)

UPDATE, JUNE 24:

I spoke with Azerbaijan’s ANewz on Tuesday afternoon about the political, economic, and social situation in the UK following the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

I compare Starmer’s pursuit of British policy abroad, including his support of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s invasion, with his troubles at home.

Commenting on Donald Trump’s insulting messages on social media, I look at the Trumpist motives and role in undermining the Starmer Government. I consider if the Trump camp — allied with the hard-right UK Reform Party and pursuing a strategy of “white nationalism” in Europe — will consider the effort with Starmer’s successor.

UPDATE 1441 GMT:

EA’s Cormac Smith speaks with Pakistan TV about the linkage of the latest UK Prime Minister to resign since 2016 and Britain’s ongoing Brexit debacle, with a cost of up to £200 billion per year.

He notes challenges for a successor Government, from controlling welfare spending to providing necessary investment in defense.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: I joined the UK’s Talk TV and Pakistan TV on Monday to assess UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation, setting it in the context of Britain’s Brexit bind.

While navigating the challenges in a damaged UK political and media culture, I explain how the root problem — as it was for Starmer’s six predecessors since 2016 — is the social and economic damage of the UK’s departure from the European Union.

I assess whether Starmer’s likely successor, former Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham, will be able to establish his Government as competent and effective. I explain how the UK is now a multi-party country with the distortion of a first-past-the-post electoral system, and I note the ongoing threat of a hard-right Reform Party with its national TV channel and allied with the Trump camp.

Joining Petrie Hosken, I discuss the challenges for a Burnham Government at home and its significance abroad, given the UK’s involvement in issues such as the defense of Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
