UPDATE 2116 GMT:

Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Silina has obtained the resignation of Defense Minister Andris Spruds after two Ukrainian drones, heading for Russian targets, entered Latvian airspace and struck oil storage facilities last week.

Silina said Spruds had lost her trust and “that of the public”: “The drone incident that occurred this week clearly demonstrated that the political leadership of the defense sector has failed to fulfill its promise of safe skies over our country.”

She named Col. Raivis Melnis as the new Defense Minister.

“Unauthorized drones should not pose a threat to public safety,” Spruds said, adding that the defense sector “has done and will continue to do much to protect the country’s airspace and ensure a sense of security for citizens”.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said he discussed the situation with Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze.

Ukraine has offered to send experts to the Baltic states to strengthen air security, Estonia’s public broadcaster ERR reported on Saturday.

Kyiv contacted the Estonian Embassy about the issue.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur had said, “All this needs to be clarified and explained, what exactly it means, what they themselves meant by it. I will start dealing with this immediately. Certainly, the easiest way for the Ukrainians to keep their drones away from our territory is to better control their activities.”

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said, “It is dangerous in another sense that Russia could take control of Ukrainian drones and send them toward us, somewhere where there could also be civilian casualties.”

UPDATE 1111 GMT:

The death toll from Russia’s attacks, breaking the three-day ceasefire, has risen to three.

The victims were in the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson regions.

UPDATE 0958 GMT:

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has posted for Mother’s Day:

Ukrainian mothers embody incredible resilience, courage, bravery, and the love that helps us endure.

Thank you to every mother for the gift of life, for believing in your children, and for your prayers, protection, and support.

UPDATE 0949 GMT:

Vladimir Putin has said there is no confirmation of a 1,000-for-1,000 exchange of prisoners of war with Ukraine as part of this weekend’s three-day ceasefire.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said the swap would be part of the halt of attacks.

But Putin said on Saturday, “We are counting on the Ukrainian side to respond to the proposal made by the president of the United States. Unfortunately, we still have not received any proposals so far.”

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Having demanded a three-day ceasefire for its Victory Day ceremonies in Moscow on Saturday, Russia has broken it with attacks across Ukraine.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to the ceasefire after a call from Donald Trump, pledging not to strike the scaled-back ceremonies in Red Square.

But the Russians murdered at least one civilian and injured at least 19 others over the past day. Air defenses prevented further casualties by intercepting all 27 drones launched by Russian forces.

A Russian drone slammed into a residential building in Ukraine’s second city Kharkiv overnight. Five people, including two 8-year-old boys, suffered shock.

Three civilians were wounded elsewhere in the region.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region in the southeast, a 3-year-old girl was moderately injured during Russian drone strikes.
