EA on International Outlets: The US Has An Authoritarian Regime
On Friday the Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, effectively enabled Donald Trump’s quest for authoritarian rule.
The Court ruled on the decision of three federal judges, in separate cases, blocking the Administration’s attempt to remove the constitutional right of birthright citizenship.
The six conservative justices did not address the merits of the rulings. Instead, they assisted Trump by declaring that a federal judge could not make a decision, in a case filed on behalf of an individual, which applies beyond their district.
The effect, not only for birthright citizenship but potentially for other issues, is to establish a patchwork where constitutional rights are protected in some areas of the US but not others.
As Justice Sonia Sotomayor summarized in his dissenting opinion: “This Court endorses the radical proposition that the President is harmed, irreparably, whenever he cannot do something he wants to do, even if what he wants to do is break the law.”

America is a country with a Constitution and a system of checks and balances and shared power between the courts, Congress, and the Presidency.
The Supreme Court has shifted the power firmly towards the Presidency. And that is problematic when you have a President who is prepared to issue a variety of executive orders, on a v
