Israeli officials say seven people in the center of the country were lightly injured.

Benjamin Netanyahu later said that residents could leave shelters.

Israel denied the claim.

During the conversation with Iran’s Abbas Araqchi, Tajano asked Terhan to avoid a military escalation, “a dynamic that would be extremely dangerous for the entire region”.

“We need to return to negotiation and diplomacy as soon as possible,” Tajani told Araqchi, saying it was the same message he gave Israel’s Gideon Sa’ar.

UPDATE 1215 GMT:

Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian has told the nation:

Our response will be strong and calculated. Israel will face consequences that will make it regret its aggression.

The reports emerging from the Middle East are deeply alarming.

Europe urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate immediately and refrain from retaliation.

A diplomatic resolution is now more urgent than ever, for the sake of the region’s stability and global security.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed that both sides should “refrain from steps that could lead to a further escalation and destabilize the whole region”.

UPDATE 1110 GMT:

Effectively endorsing Israel’s strikes, Donald Trump has demanded that Iran accept his terms over its nuclear program:

I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to “just do it”, but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn’t get it done.

I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told….

Certain Iranian hardliners spoke bravely, but they didn’t know what was about to happen. They are all DEAD now, and it will only get worse!

There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end.

Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire.

Trump said in an interview with ABC News, “News” of the Israeli attack, I think it’s been excellent. We gave [Iran] a chance and they didn’t take it. They got hit hard, very hard. They got hit about as hard as you’re going to get hit. And there’s more to come. A lot more.”

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint as nuclear facilities “must never be attacked”.

This development is deeply concerning….I reiterate that any military action that jeopardizes the safety and security of nuclear facilities risks grave consequences for the people of Iran, the region, and beyond.

Grossi expressed his readiness “to assess the situation and ensure safety, security and non-proliferation in Iran”.

Mossad and the Israeli military carried out a series of covert operations against Iran’s strategic missile infrastructure ahead of the airstrikes, say Israeli “security sources”.

The officials said Mossad operatives secretly smuggled large volumes of precision-guided weaponry into Iran and deployed them across a number of locations. The weapons were used to target Iranian surface-to-air missile systems and long-range missile launchers during the strikes.

Israeli officials say Iran has launched 100 drones towards Israel, and air defenses are carrying out interceptions.

Claimed footage of the drones is circulating on social media:

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Israel has carried out airstrikes on Iran, with targets including military commanders and nuclear facilities and scientists.

The Israel Defense Forces declared “a pre-emptive, precise, combined offensive to strike Iran’s nuclear program”, with attacks on more than 100 sites and the involvement of more than 200 fighter jets.

Among those reportedly killed are the commander-in-chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Gen. Hossein Salami; Army Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri; senior commander Ghulam Ali Rashid; and nuclear scientists Fereydoun Abbasi and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi.

Abbasi was the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization from 2011 to 2013, surviving an assassination attempt by Israel in 2010. Tehranchi was a theoretical physicist. They were targeted in their homes.

Iranian State television said children were killed in at least one of the airstrikes, in a residential area of Tehran.

Netanyahu Claims Israel Halted An Iran Nuclear Bomb

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the “many days” of strikes would succeed in “rolling back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival”. He claimed in a national address that he had pre-empted Iran’s development of nuclear weapons.

We struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. We struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear weaponization program. We targeted Iran’s main enrichment facility in Natanz. We targeted Iran’s leading nuclear scientists working on the Iranian bomb. We also struck at the heart of Iran’s ballistic missile program….

In recent months, Iran has taken steps that it has never taken before, steps to weaponize this enriched uranium, and if not stopped, Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in a very short time. It could be a year. It could be within a few months, less than a year.

That is why we have no choice but to act and act now.

Anticipating Iran’s response, he said, “Israeli citizens may have to remain in sheltered areas for lengthy periods of time.”

Donald Trump endorsed the strikes. He maintained that he had not been taken by surprise by the strike, even though he had told Netanyahu not to attack while the US was negotiating with Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The sixth set of US-Iran talks had been scheduled for Sunday in Oman.

“Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb and we are hoping to get back to the negotiating table,” Trump said. “We will see. There are several people in leadership that will not be coming back.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said:

We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense….

[We] remain in close contact with our regional partners. Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Pledges Retaliation

Iran’s Supreme Leader said Israel “committed a crime in our dear country today at dawn with its satanic, bloodstained hands”, revealing “its malicious nature even more than before by targeting residential areas”.

He acknowledged the killing of “several commanders and scientists”.

Revolutionary Guards Salami, reportedly killed this morning, had asserted on Thursday that the response to any Israeli attack be “more forceful and destructive” than in past conflicts.

The Iran Foreign Ministry said the assault “exposes global security to unprecedented threat” and called on the international community to express condemnation. It warned that the US is responsible for the consequences of “Israel’s adventurism”.

International Condemnation

Saudi Arabia denounced the strikes:

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry described the attack as a “flagrant violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security”. The UAE’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes “in the strongest terms” and expressed “deep concern over the repercussions on regional security and stability”.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters, “We strongly condemn the latest action that escalates the situation. Peace and stability in the Middle East region are extremely important to Japan, and we urge all parties involved to exercise the utmost restraint and calm the situation.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged “all parties to step back and reduce tensions urgently” after Israeli strikes on Iran, as “now is the time for restraint, calm and a return to diplomacy”.
