I joined France 24 English on Monday night for a 9-minute analysis of how Canada, facing the threat of Donald Trump, is turning to Europe for support and cooperation.
Beginning with the visit of new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to the UK and France, I examine the political, economic, and military potential of Ottawa’s realignment.
Donald Trump does not see Canada as an ally. He sees Canada as a country to be bullied and, if you take his statements at face value, to be taken over as the “51st state”.
That’s a great offense to Canadian nationalism and sovereignty, and it makes Canada rethink where its political and economic position is.
If the US is not going to be your ally, who will be?
“If the US is not going to be your ally, who will be?”

Nobody. The EU is too weak and dysfunctional to support Canada. Canada could have counted on the support of Beijing and Moscow, if it hadn’t participated in NATO’s attacks on Russia, using Ukraine as a tool to weaken Putin, and had the common sense not to arrest Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou. I’m sure Xi hasn’t forgotten that. The way Trump treats Canada is nothing new when it comes to US-Canada relations. Do older Canadians not remember the way the Americans treated Diefenbaker? He had the guts to stand up against Washington — Democratic Party admins, for the record. Why haven’t the Canadians learned? Do we hear the Democrats pushing back against Trump’s annexation plans? …No. Professor Lucas should have told France24 the truth. Canada, a beautiful and proud country burdened with incompetent leadership, will have to face the US alone. God help them.
