Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin with Donald Trump in the White House, March 12, 2025 (Sky)
Should Ireland Boycott Trump’s USA?
I joined a 56-minute panel on RTE Radio 1 on Sunday to analyze the past week in politics.
The other panelists are Lucinda Creighton, CEO of Vulcan Consulting; Daniel Murray, Policy Editor of the Business Post; and Siobhán Fenton, former Deputy Head of Press for Sinn Fein. The host is Dearbhail McDonald.
Most of the discussion is about the visit of Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin to Donald Trump in the White House. We explain how Martin avoided the “grenades” in his public appearances with Trump and J.D. Vance, and why the more important meetings took place away from the cameras.
While Irish politicians and diplomats can draw a breath of relief, they already face the next challenge. With the European Union standing up to Trump’s tariff warfare, how can Dublin prevent lasting economic and political damage?
I summarize the latest developments in Ukraine’s resistance of Russia’s 37-month invasion and US airstrikes on Houthi insurgents in Yemen.
And once again, we ponder serious issues with housing in Ireland and the Government’s apparent inability to come to grips with them.
