EA-Irish Independent Podcast: 1st 48 Hours of Trump
Trump and the Dying of American Liberalism
I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s Sean Moncrieff on Monday to pop the news bubble of a Republican legislator, Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee proposing a Constitutional amendment permitting a third Presidential term for Donald Trump.
I lay out the practical obstacles of an amendment requiring a 2/3 majority in both the House and the Senate. Each if Democrats surrendered to that, ratification by a minimum of 38 states would be needed, a process that takes several years in optimal circumstances.
Having dealt with Ogles’ stunt — “What is the Irish word for kissing someone’s backside?” — I look at the serious issue: the Trump Administration’s attempt to impose its will by breaking the US system, with immediate effects on the environment, migrants and asylum seekers, civil rights, health care, and accountability.
And I consider whether Democrats are “powerless” to deal with this. They aren’t — but they need to get their act together in communicating the stakes to the American people.
