Iran’s Supreme Leader greets students, Tehran, November 2, 2024
UPDATE, 0714 GMT:
The Islamic Republic’s currency, already at an all-time low, is sinking amid the prospect of military confrontation with Israel.
The rial dropped farther to 698,000:1 v. the US dollar on Tehran exchanges on Sunday morning.
The currency stood at 45,000:1 in early 2018 but has recurrently plummeted amid international sanctions, economic problems, and regional uncertainty.
In the past month, the rial has fallen around 15%.
ORIGINAL ENTRY: Scrambling for legitimacy amid domestic problems and Israel’s pressure, Iran’s Supreme Leader has pledged a “teeth-breaking response” to the Israelis.
Ayatollah Khamenei was addressing students on Saturday, a week after Israeli airstrikes damaged Iranian military sites including air defense batteries.
That attack was a response to Iran’s firing of 181 ballistic missiles into Israel on October 1. Tehran’s assault — which caused little substantive damage beyond a base in the Negev desert — followed months of Israeli operations including the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31 and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut on September 27.

Khamenei told the students:
The enemies, both the US and the Zionist regime, should know that they will definitely receive a teeth-breaking response for what they are doing against Iran and the Resistance Front.
This is not merely a matter of revenge but a logical action — an approach aligned with religion, ethics, and the Sharia, in accordance with international regulations.
The Supreme Leader was marking the November 4, 1979 seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran by students, now commemorated as the National Day of the Fight against Global Arrogance.
Referring to the occupation, with 52 US citizens held hostage for 444 days, Khamenei said:
We will definitely do everything necessary to prepare the Iranian nation for confronting the Arrogant Powers, whether militarily, in terms of armament, or politically. Our officials are already working on this.

Esmail Kowsari, a member of Parliament’s National Security Committee, said Saturday that the National Security Council had agreed on a response but not yet on its date and scope.
Kowsari said the attack would be executed in coordination with other “resistance groups” in the region and would be stronger than the October 1 ballistic missile attack.
US Warns Iran Against Attack
The US has warned Iran in recent days that it will not be able to restrain Israel if Tehran attacks Israeli territory again, according to an “unnamed US official and former Israeli official”.
The US official said, “We told the Iranians: We won’t be able to hold Israel back, and we won’t be able to make sure that the next attack will be calibrated and targeted as the previous one.”
He said the message had been conveyed directly to the Iranians. The Israeli source said it was passed to Tehran via Switzerland, which represents US interests in Iran.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Friday that the Biden Administration has “been very clear that Iran should not respond” and that “we will continue to support Israel”.
Pentagon Press Secretary Gen. Pat Ryder said the US is moving additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter squadron and tanker aircraft, and several US Air Force B-52 long-range strike bombers to the Middle East.
“[Defense] Secretary Austin continues to make clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every measure necessary to defend our people,” Ryder said.
Trump’s ‘maximum pressure’ policy on Iran faces major challenge: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2024/11/16/trump-maximum-pressure-policy-iran-major-challenge/
“Mr Trump may now find it harder to win regional support for his hard line against the regime in Tehran, sources told The Telegraph, especially if it comes with a policy of little to no pressure on Israel. “I think what is causing consternation in Gulf States is that Trump has chosen so many people who seem less America-first than Israel-first,” one Western diplomat said. Saudi Arabia’s orbit gradually shifted away from Washington during the Biden presidency and last year it signed up to a deal, brokered by China, to restore diplomatic relations with Iran.”
Yes, you are blessing your lock for having Trump instead of Kamal….

Social media reported a series of cyberattacks by Iranian agents against Israel over the weekend. I had predicted such measures would be taken as a non-escalatory response to Israel’s missile attacks on Iran. The Israeli limited their target package at the behest of Washington to prevent a greater war.

No publicly available evidence has yet been produced showing damage to the S-300 systems. Satellite image analysts have identified damage to Ghadir radars in western Iran only. The air defense crews killed were also based at these locations rather than Tehran where the S-300 is located.

“Tehran has warned diplomats that it is planning to use more powerful warheads and other weapons…….Iran’s regular military will be involved in the operation, marking a departure from the April 13-14 and October 1 missile attacks which were carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The official says the attack will target Israeli military sites “much more aggressively than last time,” and that Iraqi territory may be used to launch projectiles.”
Tehran finalizes plans for retaliation against Israel, military leaders to decide timing: https://www.tehrantimes.com/news/505790/Tehran-finalizes-plans-for-retaliation-against-Israel-military
“Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has finalized plans for retaliation against Israeli attacks that targeted the country on October 26th, according to Iranian lawmaker Esmail Kowsari. The details of the response have been submitted to military leaders, who will determine the timing of the retaliation,” the former Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) commander and current member of Parliament’s Defense and National Security Committee told Iranian media on Saturday. Kowsari said almost all members of the country’s Supreme National Security Council were unanimous that Iran should give a decisive response to the Zionist regime. “Responding to Israel’s latest atrocity is our legal right. We will certainly be making use of this right.”
The list of targets that Israel fired upon according to the Institute of War: https://www.understandingwar.org/sites/default/files/Iran%20Update%2C%20October%2029%2C%202024%20PDF.pdf
Only two of Iran’s 4 S-300 batteries were targeted let alone confirmed as destroyed, both of them based in Tehran.
[Editor’s Note: The repetition of unsupported claims from Iran’s regime of damage beyond the Nevatim base….]
“That attack was a response to Iran’s firing of 181 ballistic missiles into Israel on October 1. Tehran’s assault — which caused little substantive damage beyond a base in the Negev desert”
The attack targeted 3 airbases (Tel Nof, Hatzerim and Nevatim) where approximately 55 missiles made impact, including hitting hangers and runways. The damage assessment is still unknown because of censorship by the IDF. However, secondary explosions were recorded indicating munitions were hit. The Iranians claim they also targeted the Green Pine radar which supports its missile defense system. Its possible destruction may be why the U.S has recently deployed a THAAD battery.
Beyond the military sites targeted, there was inadvertent damage to Israel’s electrical grid and highways. 53 million you should be so proud, almost the cost of two SM 3 missile interceptors. I hope you at least make decent money sounding so bad sticking up for one of the worst dictators in the world.
