The award-winning composer of the anthem for the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests has been granted a prison amnesty by Iran’s authorities.
Shervin Hajipour (pictured) wrote and sang Baraye. The anthem is based on tweets posted by young Iranians, explaining why they were demonstrating follow the death of Mahsa Amini — detained and reportedly beaten by morality police — in custody in September 2022.
Hajipour told the demonstrators, “The lyrics of this song were written by you to relieve your pain.”
In February 2023, Baraye was the first song given a Grammy Award for Best Song for Social Change.
Last March, the 27-year-old artist was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for “inciting unrest against national security” and “spreading propaganda against the regime”. He was also ordered to write a song about US “atrocities”.
On Monday, Hajipour was told the case had been closed. Announcing the news on social media, he expressed hope that his generation will be able to “live the life it deserves”.
In between all the ugliness that the mullah state creates sometimes comes signs of hope and that this nightmarish regime won’t last…
