I joined Monocle Radio’s The Globalist on Monday to analyze the significance of a deal, between US President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, to raise the US debt limit and avoid a Government default on its financial responsibilities.

I consider the prospect of the agreement being confirmed by Congress, and the political consequences for both the Democrats and the GOP. And I look beyond next week to consider the fundamental contest heading into 2024’s elections: governance and responsibility v. the white noise and “scorched earth” politics of Trumpists and hard-right Republicans.
