International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi with head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Mohammad Eslami, Tehran, September 12, 2021 (West Asia News Agency)

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, will travel to Iran on Saturday for meetings with senior officials.

Grossi vowed on Wednesday that the IAEA will “never abandon” efforts for Iran to clarify its previous nuclear activities, with the presence of material at several undeclared sites.

Iran has been limiting access to nuclear facilities since early 2021. It is withholding all surveillance videos and has hindered inspectors.

In February, Tehran blocked access to a new nuclear site in Isfahan, after operations involving uranium centrifuges were transferred from Karaj.

After months of wrangling, Iran had finally agreed that the IAEA could replace cameras at the Karaj nuclear complex, heavily damaged in June 2021 by an explosion, likely overseen by Israel.

At risk of censure by the IAEA Board of Governors, Tehran agreed to a meeting with Grossi in November. However, the discussions were inconclusive, and Grossi warned the following month that restrictions on inspections was leading to only a “very blurred image” of the Iranian nuclear program.
