UPDATE, FEB 18:

The University of Birmingham’s David Dunn joined Beverley O’Connor of ABC Australia on Thursday for further analysis of Vladimir Putin’s possible next moves over Ukraine.

Russia doesn’t need any triggers for an invasion. They’re the ones setting the agenda here.

There is no prospect of Ukraine joining NATO any time soon. That is not the main reason why Russia has massed its forces on Ukraine’s borders.

ORIGINAL ENTRY, FEB 17: I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s Pat Kenny Show on Wednesday to analyze Russia leader Vladimir Putin’s next step over Ukraine after his initial gamble, threatening an invasion, was checked by US-Europe-NATO steps and signals.

We discuss whether Russia’s declaration of the withdrawal of some troops from Ukraine’s borders is a de-escalation or a decoy. We consider the options for the defense of Ukraine and the response to any Russian assault. And we look at the scenarios inside Ukraine if Putin doubles down with an all-out attack.
