Immigrants become US citizens at a naturalization ceremony, New York Public Library, July 3, 2018

I spoke with BBC 5 Live’s Emma Barnett on Tuesday about Donald Trump’s latest attempt to distract from his Coronavirus mismanagement: a tweet announcing an executive order to ban immigration into the US.

I discuss the series of developments on Monday exposing Trump’s failures. I explain why Trump — having banned Muslims from entering the US, separated children from parents, and bashing immigrants for political advantage for years — may carry out the order.

But I also evaluate why Trump’s immigrant-bashing spectacle might not work this time, as he pursues re-election.

He can do whatever he wants regarding tweets. He can do whatever he wants regarding immigration. Donald Trump has gotten by this far with spectacle, another show for us to follow.

But this time it is different. Coronavirus doesn’t distinguish between Democrat and Republican, left and right. If it continues into the summer and the American death toll keeps rising, Trump may reach his political limit.
