Donald Trump gestures at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call/Getty)

I joined Monocle 24’s Markus Hippi on Tuesday to talk through the imminent impeachment of Donald Trump and January’s trial in the Senate.

We look at this week’s House vote and then focus on whether any Republican Senators, let alone the 20 of 53 needed for a 2/3rds vote for conviction, will dare break away from Trump.

And will Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offer further protection by reinforcing the White House’s block — to the point of obstructing Congress — on witnesses and testimony?

Listen from 1:19:

In the short term, this is not the Republican Party but the Donald Trump Party — and Trump’s main interest is not in the long-term future of the Republicans, it’s his survival.

Even if Trump avoids conviction, even if some Republicans retain their seats in November, even if Trump wins a second term — the Republican Party, in terms of serving the American people when the man in the White House is accused of abusing power, that’s the long-term damage.
