Donald Trump and former National Security Advisor John Bolton

UPDATE 1445 GMT:

I spoke further with Chris Cummins of Austria’s Radio FM4 about “What Went Wrong?” between Donald Trump and John Bolton.

Two words: Trump’s ego. We can talk about policy differences but, at the end of the day, Donald Trump was upset that his big plan for an “Art of the Deal” meeting with the Taliban to resolve Afghanistan went so badly wrong over the weekend.

Trump’s White House staff told him that John Bolton was laughing with glee that this had all gone south, so Bolton was cast as the villain of the piece for Trump’s Twitter dismissal.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: I spoke with Monocle 24’s Paul Osbourne on Wednesday morning about the firing of National Security Advisor John Bolton by Donald Trump, and why the dismissal will do nothing to check the chaos of foreign policy under the Trump Administration.

Listen from 2:13:

First and foremost, US foreign policy is driven by Donald Trump’s ego. Second, it is driven by those around him like son-in-law Jared Kushner — it’s a family-and-friends foreign policy.

Bolton’s very forthright style threatened Trump personally and that’s why it had to go, not because the US is turning dovish.
