Fires burn in Lataminah in northern Hama Province after pro-Assad bombardment, April 30, 2019
UPDATE 1245 GMT:
Local activists report more Russian and regime attacks on Idlib and northern Hama Province this morning, with “dozens” of airstrikes: “Warplanes and helicopters don’t leave sky since dawn.”
They also confirm the use of barrel bombs in the assault:

ORIGINAL ENTRY:
Concerns are rising over a pro-Assad offensive to overrun the opposition area of northwest Syria, following the latest escalation in bombardment.
The Assad regime stepped up shelling of Idlib and northern Hama Provinces from mid-February, despite a Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone announced last September. The assaults have killed at least 150 people and displaced tens of thousands, in an area with more than 3 million people — about 20% of Syria’s remaining population after eight years of conflict.
There has been another spike in shelling since Sunday, with Russian warplanes reportedly carried out airstrikes. The Islamist bloc Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham has responded with raids on regime checkpoints, claiming retaliation for the pro-Assad targeting of civilian sites.
In the latest Russian and regime attacks, medical facilities have been hit — a prelude to previous offensives on areas such as east Aleppo city and the East Ghouta region near Damascus. The damaged sites included the only obstetrics hospital in northern Hama.
The White Helmets civil defense said at least two people were killed in Kafr Naboudeh in northern Hama.
Local sources said barrel bombs were used for the first time in months. The improvised explosive cylinders, usually dropped from regime helicopters, have killed thousands of civilians in the conflict.

Imminent Offensive?
Last September’s announcement of a demilitarized zone suspended a Russian-regime offensive. Moscow has periodically spoken of the need to “erase terrorists”, but — with Turkish forces alongside rebels and Ankara’s ring of observation posts in Idlib and northern Hama — has refrained from more than occasional airstrikes.
At a press conference on Monday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov proclaimed that the Assad regime has “every right” to protect people in Syria.
He falsely claimed that the Islamic State as well as HTS have staged “provocations”: “This is what is going on in the Idlib de-escalation zone.”
ISIS was pushed out of the northwest by Turkish-rebel operations in 2016 and has no fighters in the zone. But rebels have said that Russia’s Hmeimim airbase in western Syria will be targeted by rockets if attacks on civilians continue.
Lavrov said that Moscow still wants to “ensure the implementation of Russian-Turkish agreements” but:
Russia cannot tolerate these terrorists remaining safe there like in a preserved area.
There’s a limit to everything. The situation in Idlib and other areas where terrorists are still active cannot go on like this forever. We will proceed from the fact that the Syrian government has every right to ensure the safety of its people on its territory.

Pro-Assad Activists Cheer
Pro-Assad sites and bloggers have stepped up propaganda hailing a military assault.
Al-Masdar headlines, “Russian, Syrian Air Forces Launch Largest Attack of the Year as Idlib Offensive Nears”.
The site, citing a “source from the military”, said the strikes “targeted dozens of towns and villages”. It continued:
On Monday evening, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) began amassing their troops in northern Hama and southern Idlib for what appears to be a limited offensive that will target the demilitarized zone.
A source in Damascus told Al-Masdar that the military has received the green light to launch the offensive; however, he pointed out that due to pressure from Turkey, the operation will only target areas within the demilitarized zone [the 15 to 20-km wide perimeter around Idlib and northern Hama] at this time.
Al-Masdar was careful not to report any attacks on civilian areas and medical facilities.
Vanessa Beeley, a British blogger working with the regime in Syria, went farther with her welcome of an all-out assault on the entire opposition area. She said, without irony, that she was “praying for all innocent Syrian civilians who will be caught up in the battles”.
Beeley then repeated her disinformation that White Helmets rescuers, who will try to save lives and retrieve bodies in any Russian-regime offensive, are “stealing children” to stage “chemical attacks”.
Russia and pro-Assad activists recurrently — and always before major offensives — have put out the lies that the White Helmets are staging “false flag” chemical events, in an attempt to pin blame on the Assad regime. The disinformation has been renewed in the past week, including by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Sorry, just to be clear. I mean taking down by ceaselessly calling out their transgressions. There’s no question of physical violence, that would be a violation of the crystal trust. Words are the only weapons I’ll ever have, or ever need.
Scott,
On the contrary, it’s not me who’s bowing before Big Brother, nor is it me who is flouting the crystal spirit. There you go again, spuriously suggesting that I am not well aware, and cannot fully substantiate, my remarks; nor that I haven’t considered facts, nor engaged in ‘reflection, and analysis’. As I suspect you already know full well, the only reason I didn’t produce evidence at this stage is because, as anyone can see, my rely was already more than long enough, and I didn’t feel it appropriate to take up any more space. If, however, you wish to challenge me to produce hard substantiating evidence for my claims, then I have an abundance of evidence to present. So, go ahead and challenge me again Scott, and I will certainly pick up the gauntlet.
Robert,
Thank you. I think my comment about pushing pro-Assad activists and conspiracy theorists as reliable journalists stands. If telling the truth is a revolutionary act, promoting these folks and disparaging reliable information is distinctly counter-revolutionary.
S.
Hi Scott,
Of course – the crystal trust – I’m beginning to get it now. Sorry for being so slow; probably why I’ll always only be an apprentice sorcerer, rather than the real deal, like you. But then again, seeing that we’re both agents in a much larger and grander plan – me a pawn, you perhaps a knight – I guess we can only do things the way we do them, and it seems to be okay with the plan that I get to scream and bluster, to rant and rave against Big Brother. The plan knows that Big Brother can’t do anything to me. It chose me because I’m a no-count nobody, a non-entity, a prole. No political, institutional, or organizational affiliations; no website, no blogpost, no facebook page, no twitter account, no WhatsApp, no LinkedIn. As far from Big Brother’s clammy mitts as it’s possible to get. It even knows that I’m on borrowed time, so it doesn’t matter two hoots what happens to me; I’ve got nothing to lose. I can’t even be carted off anywhere, coz I’m already there. I live in Room 101. So I’m going to give one more shout out about the plan – to take down the Ministry of Truth, starting with one of its war propaganda arms, a particularly insidious website called EA Worldview …
Best, Robert
Robert,
I’m sorry — there is not a single fact in your long comment. So it is not a response to the issue of promoting unreliable pro-Assad activists and disparaging reliable information at the same time.
Best,
S.
And by the way, ‘Missy’, smearing, insulting, and lying about a genuine truth-teller has absolutely nothing to do with either class or humour. Disagree, and present a credible alternative account, by all means, but twisting the truth to suit a corrupt, warmongering narrative, is totally beyond the pale.
Scott,
Thanks for your reply. I assure you that I have read him – intensely in fact – which is probably why I received a compelling vision of him berating me to call you out, And yes, I learnt something about ‘decency’ from reading him, which is why I can tell the difference between ‘decent’ people – like Vanessa Beeley, Eva Bartlett, Riam Dalati, Max Blumenthal, and many more – and those who would dare to defend, at the expense of their own souls, such appalling groups as the ‘white helmets’ – THE FRIENDS OF CHILD BEHEADERS.
Scott,
I promise that this communication will be considerably more temperate than my above rampages. And I have no intention of trolling or continually harassing you. But I feel the need to write one more thing to you, and it is has quite a bit to do with something Missy said – about ‘a good man.’
You see, I sincerely believe that the man who felt inspired to write a biography of George Orwell was one of those very people concerned with the challenge of holding to the truth, and of adhering to the principle of ‘trying to be “good”.’ Indeed, there aren’t many people in your position who would allow this very instance of open communication with you, and right there is a clear actualisation of the above principle. There’s nothing ‘degenerate’ about that – I’m sorry for saying that.
But I still have a worry, and a perplexity. This is that there are other people whom I admire immensely, and who are similarly concerned with the above challenge, and yet some of them would undoubtedly present a narrative diametrically opposed to most of those you write on your site. So we have two incompatible positions here; two irreconcilable lemmas.
There’s only one way that I can see to try to extricate myself from between those two horns, and this to hold to Missy’s injunction. This motivates me to say that it would be like trying to see five fingers for me not to see the following people as radiant examples of those Missy refers to – as well as feeling like a soothing balm for me to cite their names:
Vanessa Beeley, Eva Bartlett, Riam Dalati, Max Blumenthal, Peter Ford, Admiral Lord West (about a year ago), Jimmy Dore, Tucker Carlson, James Corbett, Pierre le Corf, Ron Paul, Jeffrey Sachs, Baroness Cox, Glenn Greenwald, Tulsi Gabbard.
Thanks Scott, Thanks Missy
Robert,
With respect, starting from a list of people — rather than examining the work of those people — to back up your predetermined views is not an examination of facts, reflection, and analysis.
In other words, it is not pursuing Orwell’s invocation to uphold the crystal spirit by confronting and defying propaganda, disinformation, and injustice. It is a bowing down before Big Brother rather than an understanding of it and of us.
S.
And so that cheap, establishment tool, Scott Lucas continues his disgusting spread of disinformation, whilst disgracefully and hypocritically smearing genuine humanitarian journalists like Vanessa Beeley. What a phoney, venal, degenerate Lucas really is. Not a tiny morsel of self-reflection after being so woefully wrong in his ‘expert predictions’ regarding Donald Trump.
But you know what? I still see four fingers, Professor O’Brien – FOUR fingers.
Robert,
Not sure what your diatribe has to do with the news from northwest Syria, but thank you so much for your thoughts.
S.
Thank you for always gettıng the truth out and doing ıt with class and humor You are good man.
Missy,
Thanks for the boost!
Scott
You know exactly what it has to do with it, O’Brien – and your dissembling sidekick, Missy – it has to do with your bitter, malignant jealously that Ms Beeley reminds you of what a genuine truth-telling journalist can be, rather than the shoddy little sell-out that you and Missy are.
Still four fingers, O’Brien. And don’t think for one second that I’m not perfectly aware of how much you’d so dearly love to be wearing the boot that comes stamping down on my face – forever. In fact, I’m waiting every minute from now for my door to be kicked in and for me to be detained by one of your grubby intelligence cronies. But I’ll still be seeing four fingers, O’Brien – Eric wants me to convey that to you.
And you wrote Eric’s biography?!?
Robert,
Thanks for writing. Yes, I wrote a biography of Orwell. I find him very handy as I deal with propaganda and disinformation, particularly on Syria.
Perhaps you could read him carefully and reflect on “truth-telling”, journalism, and decency?
Best,
Scott
