I spoke with BBC Radio Scotland on Monday about Donald Trump, racism, and incompetence, in light of his recent remarks and of claims by former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault Newman.

If it was only Omarosa who was saying this about the President, then you could wave it off. But what she is saying corresponds with what others have said. Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Trump is a “moron” and former National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said that he is an idiot.

I think we can safely say that this is a President who does not process information, who is short-tempered, and who has a checkered history when it comes to racial matters and white supremacy.

We also discuss the ongoing issue of Trump’s “base” — “I think we pay too much attention to this” — the Administration’s use of “white anxiety”, and the importance of November’s Congressional elections:

Does the Administration triumph with dog-whistle, “us v. them” politics, or do Americans say this is not where we want to go as a nation?
