President Hassan Rouhani is preparing to shuffle his ministers as Iran’s economic crisis deepens.

The pro-Rouhani newspaper Iran flagged the upcoming change in a front-page article on Thursday. It followed Wednesday’s statement by Rouhani’s chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi on State TV that Rouhani is considering new names for his economic team.

The Economy, Trade, Industry, Labor, and Transport Ministers are all under fire as Iran struggles with expanding US sanctions compounding long-standing problems with investment, production, mismanagement, and corruption.

Growth, which had resumed after the January 2016 implementation of Iran’s nuclear agreement with the 5+1 Powers, has stalled. Unemployment, especially youth, is rising. Inflation, which Rouhani had brought down from more than 40% in 2013 to less than 10%, is set to surge after Iran’s currency lost more than 40% of its value against the US dollar this year, setting historic records with its plummet.

Protests are ongoing in sectors from farmers to teachers to merchants, with surges across the country in January and in June.

Rouhani had been resisting changes of ministers, but he has been forced back by hardline pressure in the past month, with signals including the Supreme Leader’s office, that he could be replaced.

Two weeks ago, the President gave ground by adopting a much tougher line against the US as he promoted the Supreme Leader’s concept of self-reliance through a “Resistance Economy”.

Vaezi told State TV about possible changes after he was asked about the outcome of the Cabinet’s meeting earlier this week with the Supreme Leader. Other Presidential aides, such as Vice President Mohammad Nahavandian, said they were not aware of any plans to replace minsiters.

Asked about Administration’s plan to meet the Supreme Leader’s demands, Vaezi did not elaborate but said, “When we made sure that the U.S. is leaving the nuclear deal, Rouhani ordered the administration to prepare scenarios for various situations that might arise.”

He continued, “We came up with three scenarios to cope with the problems”, without providing details.

Nahavandian indicated that Ayatollah Khamenei, for the moment, has checked the hardline pressure on Rouhani: “The Supreme Leader wanted the administration to take the lead in solving the country’s economic problems and called on all other institutions to cooperate with the administration.”
