Getting behind attention-grabbing headlines about a secret trip by CIA Director Mike Pompeo to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, I used a chat with Monocle 24’s The Briefing on Wednesday afternoon to raise questions about the significance.

The discussion was reportedly to set up the face-to-face between Kim and Donald Trump in late May or early June, but I questioned whether that occasion might be a disappointment, given the lack of clarity on the substance of the discussions. And I suggested that the important maneuvers are taking place elsewhere, between the two Koreas and with regional powers like China.
