I spoke with Georgina Godwin of Monocle 24’s The Globalist on Monday about Israel’s escalation of airstrikes on Iranian and Assad regime target in Syria.

The discussion reviews both the immediate and longer-term context of the strikes, notably Israel’s insistence that Iranian and Iranian-allied forces such as Hezbollah not move into southwest Syria near the Israeli-occupied Golan Height and its periodic raids to disrupt weapons transfers to Hezbollah.

Then there is consideration of the rhetoric from both Israel and Iran and what each might do next, and an emphasis on the pivotal role of Russia in whether there is further confrontation.

We also chat about other developments within Syria, such as the Turkish-rebel offensive against Kurdish militia in the northwest, and conclude that “this is not one country but several” in a conflict that will “go on and on”.
