Iran’s Supreme Leader has launched another verbal attack on the West, proclaiming that its stance against terrorism is “fake”.

Ayatollah Khamenei used a meeting with the President of Bosnia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegovic, for his latest challenge to the regional positions of the US and its allies: “Although such coalitions may even engage terrorists in some instances, they are not after genuinely rooting out terrorism in Iraq or in Syria.”

Iran has been an essential supporter of the Assad regime since the beginning of Syria’s uprising in 2011, and it has escalated its military involvement — alongside Russian aerial intervention — since September 2015. Recently, Tehran’s grown over the US presence in the Iraqi-Kurdish offensive to recapture Iraq’s second city Mosul from the Islamic State.

The Supreme Leader insisted on Tuesday that “the American government and some European governments” were the “main factors” in the overflow of “Takfiri terrorism” into Europe: “The humiliation of young Muslims in some rich and powerful European countries creates grounds for them to join deviant terrorist groups such as Daesh [Islamic State] and these humiliated youths embark on bombing and killing upon their return.”

Regime officials such as Speaker of Parliament Ali Larijani echoed the Leader’s messages in their photo opportunities with the Bosnian President. Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of Parliament’s National Security Committee, also took up the theme in a meeting in Paris:

We have doubts about US seriousness in the fight against terrorism. We are witnessing apparently mistaken aerial aid to Daesh and apparently mistaken attacks on the positions of the Syrian Army.

On Wednesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Araqchi took up the theme, telling an audience in Mashhad in northeast Iran, ““We call on the financial and military supporters of Takfiri terrorist groups to put an end to their support and take steps toward a sincere fight against terrorism.”

Araqchi declared, “If it wasn’t for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support, today we would have witnessed the domination of terrorism in Iraq and Syria, which are among major regions in the Muslim world.”
