PHOTO: Reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward, killed in Wednesday attack in Virginia

My University of Birmingham colleague Steve Hewitt and I each spoke to BBC radio outlets on Thursday about the killing of a Virginia reporter and her cameraman — filmed by the gunman as he attacked — and whether the shock of the event and video would lead to any move towards gun control in the US.

Our conclusion was that “talk is cheap” — witness President Obama’s response, “It’s one more argument for why we need to look at how we can reduce gun violence in this country” — but that taking effective action is a far different matter.
