LATEST: Video — 1st Footage of Syrian MiG-29 Fighter Jet

SUMMARY: Activists say at least 39 people, including at least three children, were killed on Monday by a car bomb in the town of Darkoush (see map) in Idlib Province in northwestern Syria.

The explosion was in a crowded marketplace.

Beyond the high death toll, what distinguishes this car bombing is that it took place in an insurgent-held area.

So did an insurgent faction attacks civilians in its own territory, and if so, why?

Or did the Syrian regime, which bombarded the area with barrel bombs and rockets after the explosion, set off the device?

Activists and the Syrian Coalition blamed pro-regime forces for car bombs in other opposition-controlled towns, most recently in Rankous north of Damascus. 37 people died in that attack, which opposition activists said was part of Assad’s tactic of “state-sponsored terrorism”. As with the Darkoush attack, nobody claimed responsibility.
