US Senator Dan S. Sullivan of Alaska and independent candidate Daniel J. Sullivan (AP)
UPDATE 1822 GMT:
EA’s David Dunn spoke with Dublin NewsTalk’s Anton Savage on Thursday, breaking down the key races and the possibility of Democrats taking control of both houses of Congress.
He assesses why the Democrats may triumph, including the prospect of young men and Hispanic voters moving away from the Trumpists.
And he explains the possible consequences for Trump of Democratic control, including investigations of Trump’s officials and his family.
More importantly, it breaks the myth that Donald Trump has changed American politics. It breaks the myth that the Republican Party needs to follow his agenda and kowtow to him.
ORIGINAL ENTRY: I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s Ciara Doherty on Thursday to unpack the story of Alaska’s upcoming US Senate elections and the two Dan Sullivans.
In a state with one of seven toss-up races that will determine control of the Senate, Dan S. Sullivan is the Republican incumbent. Daniel J. Sullivan is a retired schoolteacher who is standing as an independent.
A New York Times investigation revealed this week that Daniel J. Sullivan was recruited by the Democrats, part of a “ballot-stacking” operation to take votes from Dan S. Sullivan.
I examine if the case will affect the race between Dan S. Sullivan and the Democrat candidate, former Rep. Mary Peltola. Does the Trump camp’s pre-emptive attempt to block the outcome if Sullivan loses have any chance of success?
