Thursday’s Coverage: Kremlin Puts Resumption of Talks in Doubt

At least 14 civilians were murdered by a Russian drone strike on a train platform in Dnipro in southeast Ukraine on Thursday morning.

Another 14 were injured when the jet-powered drone hit as a passenger train was preparing to depart for Zaporizhzhia.

The Russian also killed two 15-year-old girls with a cruise missile on Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, and they murdered three people and wounded 15 in Kremenchuk in the Poltava region with attacks on residential buildings and vehicles.

Four Russian drones attacked Dnipro around 11 a.m. Three were downed by air defenses. Passengers were told to evacuate from the stationary train around ten minutes before the strike, with station and train staff checking each train car one by one.

But despite the air raid alert and announcements of a heightened threat, people remained on the platform.

The Russians later struck a student dormitory. The attacks left around 350,000 households in and near Dnipro without power.

Zelensky: “Just and Decisive Action by America and Europe is Needed”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky posted:

A horrific Russian strike on the railway station in Dnipro….

Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating? This is precisely why Ukraine has always said that just and decisive action by America and Europe is needed in response to Russian escalation – sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased for as long as this Russian war continues.

European leaders offered support. French President Emmanuel Macron posted: “We must aspire to far more than a localized ceasefire like the one that has just been negotiated locally in Oleshky. It is intolerable that Russia continues to oppose all proposals to this end, continuing to bet on escalation and targeting civilians.”

European Union Council President António Costa, denouncing the “cruel and devastating” attacks, said, “The EU will continue to increase the pressure on Russia and to support Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved. We call on all our international partners to do the same.”

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze described the “mass murder”: “Conducting these State sponsored terrorist attacks does not signal readiness for peace.”
