Saturday’s Coverage: US Postpones Trilateral Talks to End Russia’s Invasion
UPDATE 1215 GMT:
Officials say Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov rudely responded to French representatives seeking European participation in talks to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In February, French Presidential advisers Emmanuel Bonne and Bertrand Buchwalter traveled to Moscow to meet with Ushakov. A senior European diplomat said the Russia’s response was “sorry, but actually no, fuck you”.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted that the Europeans “don’t want to help the peace process” and the French representative “didn’t bring any positive signals…so there was nothing postive for [them] to hear”.
An official involved in back-channel talks said, “I don’t think the Russians want to have talks anytime soon again. Because there’s nothing to talk about.”
In a phone call with NBC News, Donald Trump defied reality: “I’m surprised [Ukraine President Volodymyr] Zelensky doesn’t want to make a deal. Tell Zelensky to make a deal, because Putin is ready to make a deal. Zelensky is much harder to negotiate with.”
UPDATE 1159 GMT:
Ukraine has struck one of the largest oil logistic hubs in southern Russia for the second time in four days.
The attack was on the Tikhoretsk oil pumping station in Krasnodar Krai.
Photos and videos posted by residents showed a large fire.
ORIGINAL ENTRY: At least seven civilians were murdered as Russia fired almost 500 missiles and drones across Ukraine on Saturday.
Six people were killed, five of them in the Kyiv region, and 15 wounded by waves of 68 missiles and around 430 drones. Energy infrastructure was targeted, and residential buildings, schools and businesses.
In the afternoon, one man was murdered and 19 people injured by four Russian guided bombs on a residential area in Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine.
A 17-year-old boy is in serious condition. Two victims were trapped beneath rubble and rescued by emergency workers.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky posted:
Russia will try to exploit the war in the Middle East to cause even greater destruction here in Europe, in Ukraine.
This is why we must be fully aware of the real level of the threat and prepare accordingly, namely: in Europe, we need to develop the production of air defense missiles – especially those capable of countering ballistic threats – as well as all other systems necessary to truly protect lives, regardless of what may be happening in any other part of the world.
Europe is able to ensure this level of reliable protection.
Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the massive Russian attack are currently underway in the Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Mykolaiv regions. All necessary services are involved. The main target for the Russians was the energy infrastructure of the Kyiv region, but… pic.twitter.com/ddqRUmQFkt
