UPDATE 0654 GMT:

Ukraine air defenses downed 114 of 137 drones, 49 of them jet-powered, launched by Russia overnight.

Strikes were recorded at 17 locations.

UPDATE 0620 GMT:

Fuel is being shipped from South Korea to Russia via sanctioned tankers amid Russian shortages.

In July and August more than 176,000 tons of Russian-bound fuel, mostly diesel, were loaded at several South Korean ports, according to port records and ship-tracking data. Seven tankers made 14 voyages to the Russian Far East.

Three of the vessels were under sanctions by the UK and the European Union, and one took on its cargo through a ship-to-ship transfer in South Korean waters.

It is unclear who owned or sold the fuel.

Amid Ukraine’s counter-attacks on oil refineries, Russian authorities have banned exports of gasoline and diesel. Rationing was introduced at some point during the summer in more than 50 Russian and Russian-occupied regions.

UPDATE 0619 GMT:

A Russian drone struck one of the bridges over the Dnipro River in Zaporizhzhia city during an overnight attack.

The bridge has been closed and traffic rerouted.

Five people in the region were injured, including two members of the Red Cross, during the Russian attacks.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Ukraine’s drones have carried out mass attacks across Russia’s Moscow region, striking the area’s largest oil facility.

Russian State media said the assault was the largest in two years on the region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed at least 650 drones flew towards the capital, with air defenses destroying the majority at a distance and downing downing 105 as they approached.

The UAVs hit the Volodarsk Linear Production and Dispatch Center near the village of Konstantinovo, around 40 km (25 miles) from downtown Moscow. Eyewitness footage showed flames erupting and smoke billowing.

Volodarsk has an annual output of 3 million tons of petroleum products. Pipelines connect the facility to major airports in the Moscow region.

Ukraine had limited its strikes on oil refineries and other sites in recent days, as Donald Trump falsely claimed that the attacks were the main cause of soaring diesel prices ahead of November’s US elections.

However, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Kyiv would escalate its attacks because of Moscow’s attempt to force Ukrainian surrender with airstrikes.

We have to respond in any way. With their attacks on our energy, we have to respond on their energy. First of all, oil refiners: what gives money to them for this war.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry claims 51% of Russia’s oil refining capacity has been disabled by the counter-attacks.
