I joined Poland’s TVP World on Wednesday to evaluate the issue of immigration across Europe and how Russia is trying to exploit it for political and social division and turmoil.
We begin with the case of Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in north Africa which faced an influx of 72,000 migrants from Morocco last month. All were returned to Morocco, but almost 100 died. Meanwhile, hard-right activists exploited the situation to whip up hostility to migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers — and to promote “white nationlist” parties across Europe and the UK.
I set out fact v. fiction over migration and individual European countries.
Then I turn to the political warfare of Russia and its allies amid Moscow’s full-scale invasion. I discuss the immediate case of tunnels from Belarus into Lithuania and Latvia, and the wider context of Russian operations — from racial and social disinformation to election interference — throughout Europe and the US since 2014.
And I note Russia’s ally in this anti-immigration effort to weaken Europe: the Trump Administration.
