As the G7 nations — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US — gather in Evian, France on Monday, I joined Al Jazeera English’s Inside Story to discuss if the “G6+1” can function given the Trump camp’s rejection of alliances and constructive partnerships.
I provide the context of crises such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US-Israel Wars on Iran and Lebanon, Donald Trump’s tariffs, and global issues such as climate change and post-COVID health.
I navigate between Jacques Reland of the Global Policy Institute, who argues that the G7 is on the point of obsolencence but still has a symbolic function, and Beijing-based Einar Tangen, who takes the Chinese nationalist view that the organization should be scrapped.
And I ask, “Can middle powers — as Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney proposes — bond together to deal with issues?
